For my community project, I
did a tabling event at school. For this tabling event, it was organized by
Community Standards and Student Conduct. I’m the Director of Public Relations
for the Peer Volunteer Group which is tied with Student Conduct. Student Conduct
which is also known as the AToD meaning alcohol tobacco and other drugs task
force is all about educating students about the core values (integrity,
community, fairness, respect, and responsibility) investigating complaints,
resolving, dismissing or referring cases.
The
tabling event was called Random Acts of Kindness. This event was held during
kindness week and the goal here was to spread the joy and hospitality amongst
fellow students, bring a delight and put a smile on their faces as well as to
get them involved. The purpose of the event was to relay positivity and morale
through the united weeks long theme of kindness where students participated in
a n activity that gave them a chance to perform a random act of kindness to
another student in the MSC.
I
choose this event due to the fact that our club is closely with Student Conduct
I thought that for any tabling event that they were holding we can also be a
part of to allow students apart the club to see how to do tabling and for
volunteer services. During the event there was a tri-fold poster that was used
to pictures and quotes that spread the message of being kind unto others,
Hershey kisses and note cards that was on that table which were there for
anyone who walked by to take one. We also had brochures that related to
relieving ways to find happiness without substances and hand warmers.
I contributed towards this
event by just coming early and setting everything up such as getting the
attendance sheet ready, the supplies that were needed: poster, Hershey kisses,
note, peppermints, cards, tell the students/faculty about acts of kindness or
ways to eliminate leading to drugs when they are depressed. For the Hershey
kisses & peppermints and note cards I helped with putting them together,
that way when someone walked by they can pick up a little quote of happiness
along with their choice of a kiss or a peppermint and a hand warmers.
The
tabling overall was a huge success. In regards to tabling I haven’t done too
many during my 3 years at Kean until this semester. Seeing students and faculty
walk and come back and watch their faces light up made my day. It was in fact
valentine’s day and during the day it wasn’t the nicest outside, it was rather
cold and gloomy which was a big deal to some people. At the tabling event, some
people actually were quite open and told me and the other peer educator about a
time where they used drugs or felt a certain towards bullying and racism. It
made me feel very happy on the inside knowing and unfortunate for the students
who were faced with certain situations due to society. I understood that by
having the poster available at the event and allowing to students to pledge to
be kind really meant a lot to each person who came by in a different way.
